If you work with digital media you will at some point have to deal with
the corrupting of files or crash of your hard drive. The following is a
list of steps to take to ensure you preserve what you can from the
media.
If the hard drive is making a “clicking” sound, most likely
that is going to be a true hardware problem. The platter or disk has
come into contact with another component. You will need the services of
a computer forensics data recovery operation with a clean room so the
drive can be rebuilt.
Before touching anything inside the computer, you want to ground
yourself and remove any possibility of discharging static electricity
onto the hard drive. You can touch any metal part of the frame of the
computer. There are also bands that you can wear on your wrist to
eliminate this static discharge.
Carefully remove the screws holding the hard drive in its location
inside the computer. Remove the ribbon and the power cord from the hard
drive. Make note of the jumper settings between the ribbon and the
power cord.
Carefully put the drive into a non-static bag for transportation to its
final destination. Seal the bag with tape, put your initials and date
on the outside.
The company that will perform the critical data recovery will want to
know all the symptoms to be able to troubleshoot the hard drive. |
